Escherichia coli causa sepse em neonatos que ingerem a bactéria na época do nascimento. O processo envolvido na capacidade da E. coli de viajar do trato entérico para a corrente sanguínea é pouco compreendido. Este modelo in vitro avalia a capacidade das cepas de E. coli de viajar através das células epiteliais intestinais.
