Escherichia coli veroorzaakt sepsis bij pasgeborenen die de bacteriën rond het moment van geboorte binnenkrijgen. Het proces dat betrokken is bij het vermogen van E. coli om van het enterische kanaal naar de bloedbaan te reizen, is slecht begrepen. Dit in vitro model beoordeelt het vermogen van E. coli stammen om door de darmepitheelcellen te reizen.
