Met effector functies te onderscheiden van andere T-cel subsets, zijn Th17 cellen centraal zijn betrokken bij inflammatoire auto-immuniteit. Deze in vitro Th17 differentiatie protocol verschaft een middel om te bepalen of naïeve CD4 + T-lymfocyten kunnen differentiëren in Th17 cellen en hun rol bij auto-immuniteit en gastheerrespons verder te onderzoeken.
