Proteínas estruturalmente relacionadas frequentemente exercem funções biológicas distintas. A troca das regiões equivalentes destas proteínas a fim de criar proteínas quiméricas constitui uma abordagem inovadora para identificar regiões críticas da proteína que são responsáveis pela sua divergência funcional.
