Gram-negatieve bacteriën produceren twee ruimtelijk gescheiden membranen. Het buitenste membraan wordt van het binnenste membraan verdeeld door een periplasma en een peptidoglycanlaag. Het vermogen om de dubbele tweelagen van deze microben te isoleren is van cruciaal belang geweest voor het begrijpen van hun fysiologie en pathogenese.
