Aktiviteten af enkelte neuroner fra voksen-alderen mus kan studeres ved at adskille neuroner fra bestemte områder af hjernen og ved hjælp af fluorescerende membranpotentialet farvestof billeddannelse. Ved afprøvning reaktioner på ændringer i glucose, kan denne teknik anvendes til at undersøge glucose følsomhed voksne ventromediale hypothalamus neuroner.
