Hospitals render inpatient and outpatient services. Inpatient services provide care to patients who reside in the hospital for an indeterminate period, ranging from days to months. Some inpatient services include intensive care units, hospital wards, and surgeries. Outpatient services are provided to patients who do not stay overnight but visit a hospital for diagnosis or treatment, for example, diagnostic tests, minor surgical procedures, and health education. In hospitals, the fundamental role of a nurse is to provide direct and quality patient care. Yet, nurses also take up the role of managers, administrators, nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, researchers, patient educators, and in-service educators.
