Escherichia coli orsakar sepsis hos nyfödda som får i sig bakterierna runt födseln. Processen som är involverad i E. colis förmåga att resa från det enteriska området till blodomloppet är dåligt förstådd. Denna in vitro-modell bedömer förmågan hos E. coli-stammar att resa genom tarmepitelcellerna.
