Escherichia coli forårsager sepsis hos nyfødte, der indtager bakterierne omkring fødselstidspunktet. Processen involveret i E. coli's evne til at rejse fra den enteriske kanal til blodbanen er dårligt forstået. Denne in vitro-model vurderer E. coli-stammers evne til at rejse gennem tarmepitelcellerne.
