Corticale netværk styres af en lille, men varieret sæt hæmmende interneuroner. Funktionel undersøgelse af interneuroner kræver derfor målrettet optagelse og stringent identifikation. Beskrevet her er en kombineret tilgang, der involverer hele-celle optagelser fra en enkelt eller synaptisk koblede par af neuroner med intracellulær mærkning, post-hoc morfologiske og immuncytokemisk analyse.
