We demonstrate the extraction of ammonium from an ammonium-rich stream using an electrochemical and a bioelectrochemical system. The reactor setup, operation and data analysis are discussed.
Streams such as urine and manure can contain high levels of ammonium, which could be recovered for reuse in agriculture or chemistry. The extraction of ammonium from an ammonium-rich stream is demonstrated using an electrochemical and a bioelectrochemical system. Both systems are controlled by a potentiostat to either fix the current (for the electrochemical cell) or fix the potential of the working electrode (for the bioelectrochemical cell). In the bioelectrochemical cell, electroactive bacteria catalyze the anodic reaction, whereas in the electrochemical cell the potentiostat applies a higher voltage to produce a current. The current and consequent restoration of the charge balance across the cell allow the transport of cations, such as ammonium, across a cation exchange membrane from the anolyte to the catholyte. The high pH of the catholyte leads to formation of ammonia, which can be stripped from the medium and captured in an acid solution, thus enabling the recovery of a valuable nutrient. The flux of ammonium across the membrane is characterized at different anolyte ammonium concentrations and currents for both the abiotic and biotic reactor systems. Both systems are compared based on current and removal efficiencies for ammonium, as well as the energy input required to drive ammonium transfer across the cation exchange membrane. Finally, a comparative analysis considering key aspects such as reliability, electrode cost, and rate is made.
This video article and protocol provide the necessary information to conduct electrochemical and bioelectrochemical ammonia recovery experiments. The reactor setup for the two cases is explained, as well as the reactor operation. We elaborate on data analysis for both reactor types and on the advantages and disadvantages of bioelectrochemical and electrochemical systems.
Gjenvinning av verdifulle produkter fra avløpsvann gevinster betydning som verdifulle ressursene blir knappe og behandling uten utvinning utgjør bare en kostnad. Avløpsvann inneholder både energi og næringsstoffer som kan gjenopprettes, og nærings utvinning kan bidra til å lukke produksjonssløyfe 1. Utvinning av energi gjennom anaerob fordøyelsen er en veletablert prosess, mens gjenvinning av næringsstoffer er mindre vanlig. Utvinning av næringsstoffer fra flytende avfallsstrømmer som urin og gjødsel har vært mye undersøkt, for eksempel, gjennom produksjon av struvitt og direkte stripping av ammoniakk 2,3. Imidlertid er behovet for kjemisk tilsetning en ulempe av disse prosessene 4. Her presenteres en teknikk for utvinning av kationiske næringsstoffer fra avfallsstrømmer, inkludert både kalium og ammonium. Den kationiske form av disse næringsstoffer tillater utvinning ved hjelp av en ioneselektiv membran i en elektrokjemisk system. I dette tilfellet er den electrochemical-systemet består av et anodekammer (hvor oksydasjon finner sted), et katodekammer (hvor reduksjonen finner sted), og en ioneselektiv membran for å skille kamrene. En spenning påtrykkes over cellen for å frembringe en strøm fra anoden til katoden. Denne spenningen kan genereres av en ekstern strømkilde for å drive vann oksidasjon og reduksjon reaksjoner. Alternativt anodisk oksidasjon, f.eks av organisk stoff, kan katalyseres av electro bakterier, som krever mindre strøm. Å lukke kretsen og opprettholde ladingen balanse, må en ladede arter vandrer mellom elektrodene for hvert elektron generert. Ammonium transport fra anodekammeret til katode-kammeret på tvers av en kationbyttemembran (CEM) kan således kompensere strømmen av elektroner 4,5.
Teknikken som presenteres her ikke bare fjerner ammonium fra avfallsstrømmer, men også gjør sin utvinning. Total ammoniakk nitrogen (TAN) eksisterer i likevekt av både Ammonium (NH4 +) og ammoniakk (NH3), og er avhengig av pH og temperatur 6. NH4 + er rikelig tilgjengelig på grunn av høy TAN konsentrasjon og nær nøytral pH i anodekammeret, og denne positivt ladede arter kan derfor bli drevet av strømmen over CEM inn i katoderommet. Den nåværende driver reduksjon av vann på katoden, noe som fører til produksjon av hydroksid-ioner og hydrogengass. TAN likevekt forskyves til nesten 100% NH3 grunn av den høye pH-verdi i katodekammeret (> 10,0). NH 3 er en gass som lett kan overføres via luftsirkulasjon fra strippeenheten til absorpsjonskolonnen, hvor den er fanget og konsentrert i en syreløsning.
Denne teknologien har potensiale til å redusere ammonium toksisitet i løpet av anaerob nedbrytning av N-rike strømmer som gjødsel, og dermed øke gjenvinning av energi fra disse avfallsstrømmer, samtidigutvinne næringsstoffer 4. Elektrokjemisk og bioelectrochemical utvinning av ammonium kan også brukes som nærings utvinning teknikk på avfallsstrømmer med en høy TAN innhold som urin og dermed unngå kostnader for nærings fjerning ved et renseanlegg 7.
Protokollen presentert her kan tjene som grunnlag for mange forskjellige elektrokjemiske og bioelectrochemical eksperimenter, som vi benytter en modulær reaktor. Forskjellige elektrodetyper, membraner og ramme tykkelser kan kombineres slik det er beskrevet i protokollen nedenfor. Hovedformålet med den protokoll er å tilveiebringe en anordning for sammenligning av elektrokjemisk ammonium utvinning og bio-elektrokjemisk ammonium-utvinning ved hjelp av en elektrolysecelle. Systemene er vurdert i forhold til utvinning effektivitet, strøminngang og reproduserbarhet.
Manuskriptet gir de nødvendige verktøy for å sette opp en bioelectrochemical og en elektrokjemisk celle for ammonium utvinning. Beregningene som presenteres i resultat delen gir parametrene for evaluering av systemytelsen. De biologiske og elektrokjemiske systemer er like i oppsett og funksjon.
