Standard precautions are the primary infection prevention and control measures applied in every healthcare setting for all patients, irrespective of their disease condition. Hand hygiene is the most critical means of infection control. In addition, healthcare settings must supply personal protective equipment, or PPE, to their workers to minimize exposure. PPE includes gowns, masks, face shields, eye protection, gloves, and shoe covers. Their use depends on risk assessment and the extent of exposure anticipated. For example, surgical gloves are worn when performing high-risk procedures like lumbar punctures. Some other very important standard precautions routinely followed in healthcare settings include following respiratory hygiene and cough etiquettes; regular cleaning and disinfection of surfaces; preventing exposure and contamination of clothing; appropriate handling, cleaning, and disinfection of patient care equipment and devices; and administration of parenteral medications using aseptic techniques. Sharps must be discarded in puncture-resistant containers and the two-hand method of recapping of needles must be prohibited.
