Kortikala nätverk styrs av en liten, men mångfald av hämmande intern. Funktionell undersökning av intern kräver därför riktade inspelning och rigorös identifiering. Beskrivs här är en kombinerad strategi som omfattar hela-cell inspelningar från enkla eller synaptically kopplade par av nervceller med intracellulär märkning, post-hoc morfologisk och immunocytokemisk analys.
