Escherichia coli forårsaker sepsis hos nyfødte som inntar bakteriene rundt fødselen. Prosessen involvert i E. colis evne til å reise fra enterisk kanal til blodet er dårlig forstått. Denne in vitro-modellen vurderer evnen til E. coli-stammer til å reise gjennom tarmepitelcellene.
