De Trowell-type orgaankweekmethode is gebruikt om complexe signaleringsnetwerken te ontrafelen die de tandontwikkeling regelen en, meer recent, voor het bestuderen van regulatie die betrokken is bij stamcellen van de continu groeiende muizensnijder. Fluorescerende reporter diermodellen en live-imaging methoden vergemakkelijken diepgaande analyses van tandheelkundige stamcellen en hun specifieke niche micro-omgeving.
